Dengue fever is a mosquito((Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus))-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Almost half of the world’s population, about 4 billion people, live in areas with a risk of dengue. Dengue is often a leading cause of illness in areas with risk.
Disease characteristics (signs and symptoms)
Although most cases of dengue are asymptomatic or mild, it can present as a severe, flu-like illness affecting infants, young children and adults, but rarely results in death. Symptoms usually last 2-7 days, with an incubation period of 4-10 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. The World Health Organization classifies dengue fever into 2 main categories: dengue fever (with/without warning signs) and severe dengue fever. The classification of dengue fever as with or without warning signs is to help health workers triage patients for admission, ensure close observation, and minimize the risk of developing more severe dengue fever.
