To prevent fish from eating his body, people threw rice dumplings into the river and raced dragon boats to scare them away—these customs evolved into today’s festival activities.
The festival is rich in traditions. Eating zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves with sweet or savory fillings, is the most iconic practice. Dragon boat racing is another highlight, where teams paddle vigorously to drumbeats in a thrilling competition. People also hang mugwort and wear scented sachets to ward off evil spirits and diseases.
