World Hepatitis Day: Take Action to Eliminate Hepatitis
July 28, 2024 · The 14th World Hepatitis Day
July 28th of each year is World Hepatitis Day, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise global awareness of viral hepatitis and promote prevention, detection and treatment. This year’s theme is “One Life, One Liver”, which emphasizes the importance of liver health and calls for global action to reduce the health threats posed by hepatitis.
Hepatitis: A Global Public Health Challenge
Hepatitis is a general term for liver inflammation, which is mainly caused by five viruses: A, B, C, D and E. Among them, hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) are the most common types of chronic hepatitis, which can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer and even death. According to WHO statistics:
- About 354 million people worldwide have chronic hepatitis B or C.
- About 1.1 million people die each year from hepatitis-related diseases.
- 90% of people with hepatitis B and 80% of people with hepatitis C are not diagnosed or treated
Although hepatitis is extremely harmful, it is a preventable, detectable and treatable disease. Through vaccination, early screening and standardized treatment, we are expected to achieve the WHO goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030.
How to Prevent Hepatitis?
- Vaccination
- Hepatitis B vaccine can effectively prevent HBV infection (my country has included hepatitis B vaccine in the childhood immunization program).
- Hepatitis A and E vaccines can also provide long-term protection.
- Safe injection and blood management
- Avoid sharing personal items such as needles and razors.
- Ensure the safety of medical procedures and blood transfusions.
- Healthy Lifestyle
- Reduce alcohol intake to avoid fatty liver and liver damage.
- Maintain a balanced diet and control weight to reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Early screening and treatment protect liver health
Many hepatitis patients are asymptomatic in the early stages, so regular testing is essential:
- Hepatitis B: Blood tests for HBsAg, HBV DNA and other indicators.
- Hepatitis C: Anti-HCV antibody screening, which can be cured with antiviral drugs after diagnosis (over 95% cure rate).
